How do I verify a UK casino is properly licensed and safe?

Go directly to the UK Gambling Commission's public register at gamblingcommission.gov.uk/public-register. Every legitimate UK casino displays a licence number or account reference in its footer — usually at the very bottom of the homepage. Take that number and search for it on the register. The result will show you whether the licence is active, which company holds it, what activities it covers, and whether any regulatory actions have been taken against the operator. Confirm three things: the licence status is "active," the trading name matches the casino you are visiting, and the licensed activities include "remote casino." If the number returns no results or points to a different company, do not deposit. Also check the player fund protection level — basic, medium, or high — which indicates how your money is held relative to the operator's business funds. This entire process takes less than a minute and is the single most reliable safety check available.

Are my winnings from UK online casinos taxable?

No. In the United Kingdom, gambling winnings are not subject to income tax, capital gains tax, or any other form of personal taxation. This applies to all forms of gambling — casino games, sports betting, lottery, bingo — regardless of the amount won. A player who wins £10 and a player who wins £10 million are treated identically under UK tax law: neither owes anything to HMRC on their winnings. The tax burden falls on the operators, not the players. UK-licensed gambling companies pay Remote Gaming Duty on their gross gambling yield from British customers — currently 21%, rising to 40% from 1 April 2026. This is the mechanism through which gambling is taxed in the UK — at the business level, not the individual level. You do not need to declare gambling winnings on a self-assessment tax return, and there is no threshold above which this changes. If you are a recreational player, your winnings are yours in full.

What happens to my funds if a UK-licensed casino closes down?

The outcome depends on the operator's player fund protection level, which is published on the UKGC register. At the "high" protection level, player funds are held in a separate trust account or equivalent arrangement that is ring-fenced from the operator's business assets. If the company becomes insolvent, your money is not treated as part of the company's estate — it is held for return to players. At the "medium" level, there is some degree of fund segregation, but the protections are less absolute. At the "basic" level — the minimum required by the UKGC — player funds may be held alongside operational funds, and in the event of insolvency, your balance becomes an unsecured claim against the company's assets. You would be treated as a creditor, alongside suppliers and other parties, with no priority over your funds. This is why checking the protection level matters before you deposit significant amounts. The information is freely available on the UKGC register, and operators with "high" protection status offer meaningfully better security for your balance.
